European or Brazilian Portuguese?

Portuguese is one language with two written standards, and a worksheet should follow the one your class learns. So there are two conjugation tools. The European Portuguese worksheets follow Portugal: falámos with an accent in the -ar preterite, spellings such as registar and planear, and reflexive pronouns after the verb (levanto-me, levantar-me-ei). The Brazilian Portuguese worksheets follow Brazil: falamos, registrar and planejar, and the pronoun before the verb (eu me levanto, tinha me levantado). Each ranks its 600 verbs by subtitles from its own country, so apanhar and partilhar rank high in Portugal's list, pegar and compartilhar in Brazil's. The grammar terms differ too: Portugal says condicional and conjuntivo, Brazil futuro do pretérito and subjuntivo.

To look up one verb, each variety also has conjugation tables with every form of each verb on a page of its own: European Portuguese conjugation tables and Brazilian Portuguese conjugation tables.

Learning Portuguese verb conjugation

Portuguese verbs end in -ar, -er or -ir (pôr and its family aside), and the regular ones follow one pattern per ending. Some change their spelling to keep their sound (ficar, fiquei; conhecer, conheço), and the common irregular verbs, ser, estar, ter, ir, fazer and pôr, are worth drilling on their own. Portuguese also has two tenses many learners never met in another language: the future subjunctive (quando eu tiver tempo) and the personal infinitive (para nós falarmos). Both tools cover them, in 18 tenses with the Portuguese name of each.

Start with the present of regular verbs, add the preterite and the imperfect of the irregular ones, then move to the subjunctive when your class reaches it. The fill-in boxes and the quick quiz come with an answer key on separate pages, and the verb chart prints every form filled in.

Free Portuguese worksheets for classrooms

The worksheets print in black and white on A4 or US Letter, save as PDF, and need no account. Teachers may photocopy them for their classes. If you teach another language too, see all the free language tools.
