Free Russian Noun Declension Quiz
Practice the Russian cases online, one form at a time. Pick singular or plural, the cases and the nouns, type each form and press Enter, and the quiz marks it right or wrong at once, then shows the form with its stress mark. Keep going as long as you like, then retry only the forms you missed. No Russian keyboard needed. It's free, needs no signup and works on a phone.
Untick a box to leave those nouns out. A noun is in the quiz when it matches a ticked box in each column. A column with nothing ticked keeps all its nouns.
How the Russian case quiz works
You set it up in three steps. First tick singular, plural or both. Then tick the cases you want: all six, or just the one your class is on. Each case shows the question it answers and words that take it, so the instrumental reads кем? чем? with с, за and под. Then choose the nouns. With nothing ticked you get all 600 nouns from the worksheets; tick boxes to narrow them by gender or animacy. The quiz shuffles every question into a new order each time and asks for one form at a time, such as “instrumental · книга · plural”. Type the form and press Enter. It's marked right or wrong at once, and the correct form is shown with its stress mark. Press Stop when you've had enough to see your score and the forms you missed, and “Practice my mistakes” quizzes you on those and nothing else.
Typing Russian without a Russian keyboard
Under the answer box is an on-screen Cyrillic keyboard, laid out like a Russian one, so you can click or tap the letters. Capital letters don't matter. Stress marks are never typed, and е for ё is fine. With the prepositional you may type the preposition too: о книге and книге both count. But the letters count: ы for и, or е for и, is marked wrong, because that is exactly what a case ending is.
Animate nouns and the accusative
Every question shows the noun's meaning and gender, and marks animate nouns. That matters most in the accusative. A masculine animate noun usually takes the genitive form there (я вижу брата), and in the plural every animate noun does (я вижу сестёр). Masculine nouns in -а, such as папа, follow the feminine pattern instead (я вижу папу). Inanimate nouns keep the nominative form (я вижу стол, я вижу книги). Tick Animate and the accusative together to drill exactly that.
How accurate are the forms?
The forms come from Wiktionary, and we checked all six cases, singular and plural, of the 600 nouns against an independent source, the OpenRussian dictionary, stress marks included. Of 6,945 forms compared, 6,898 agreed, and we checked each of the 47 that differed by hand. Where a noun is animate or not by meaning, as модель and дух are, both accusatives are accepted.
A quiz for you, a worksheet for the class
The quiz is made for one person at a keyboard or a phone. For a class, the same nouns print as Russian noun declension worksheets, with answer keys on separate pages. To look up one noun, every form of all 600 is in the Russian noun declension tables. For the cases in full sentences, try the Russian case worksheets, and for verbs, the Russian verb conjugation quiz.
Frequently asked questions
Is this Russian case quiz free?
Yes. There is no account, no email address and no limit on how long you practice. It works in the browser on a computer or a phone.
Can I practice just one case?
Yes. Tick only the cases you want, such as the instrumental, and singular, plural or both. Each case on the setup screen shows the question it answers and words that take it, such as кем? чем? and с, за, под for the instrumental.
Which nouns are in the quiz?
All 600 nouns from the worksheets, unless you tick boxes to narrow them: masculine, feminine or neuter nouns, the plural-only and indeclinable ones, and animate or inanimate nouns. Ticks in one group add up, and groups narrow each other, so Feminine and Animate together give feminine people and animals.
Do I need a Russian keyboard?
No. The quiz has an on-screen Cyrillic keyboard laid out like a Russian one. If you have a Russian keyboard layout installed, type with it as usual.
Do I have to type stress marks or ё?
No. The quiz ignores stress marks, and you may type е for ё. The correct form is always shown with its stress mark, so you learn the stress as you go.
Can I type the preposition with the prepositional case?
Yes. О книге and книге are both marked right, and so are в книге and на столе.
Can I practice only the forms I got wrong?
Yes. Press Stop to see your score and a list of the forms you missed, then press "Practice my mistakes" to go through just those again.
