Free German Prepositions Worksheets
Make printable German prepositions worksheets for the prepositions and levels your class is on. Four exercises cover them: the article after each preposition (mit dem, für den, wegen des), wo or wohin pairs (in den Park · im Park), placement verbs (stellen or stehen?) and a one-page chart of the two-way prepositions. Shuffle deals new sentences with the same choices, and every exercise with gaps can come with an answer key that starts on a new page. Print on A4 or US Letter or save as PDF, free and with no signup.
Four German prepositions exercises
Each worksheet uses one of four exercises.
- Fill in the article (mit dem, für den, wegen des). One sentence per line, with the article to fill in after an accusative, dative, two-way or genitive preposition. It runs on the same engine as the prepositions exercise in our German case worksheets, with the 139 sentences written for our German prepositions quiz added.
- Wo or wohin? (in den Park · im Park). Pairs of sentences with the same two-way preposition: one where someone or something goes to a new place, then one where it is. The article is blanked in both.
- Placement verbs (stellen or stehen? legen or liegen?). Pairs built on stellen and stehen, legen and liegen, or setzen and sitzen. Students fill in the verb, with both verbs given as the hint (legen / liegen), and the article as well.
- Prepositions chart (one page). The rules and the lists on a single sheet, to keep as a reference.
Fill in the article covers all four groups, and so does the chart. The two pair exercises drill the two-way prepositions, the ones students mix up.
Choosing what each worksheet drills
Fill in the article is the one exercise with filters. Choose one or more groups: Accusative (für dich, durch den Park), Dative (mit dem Bus, bei mir), Two-way (in den Park, im Park) or Genitive (wegen des Regens). Then choose the levels, from A1 to B2. The builder shows how many sentences match, up to 848 with everything ticked. The two pair exercises draw on fixed sets instead: 48 wo or wohin pairs and 26 placement verb pairs. The chart needs no choices at all.
Press Create worksheet, and the print preview sets the rest. Choose 10, 15, 20, 25 or 30 lines, or 5, 8, 10, 12 or 15 pairs, and press Shuffle for new sentences. Hints print the nominative article in brackets after each gap: in ___ (der) Park. Leave them off for a test. Then pick A4 or US Letter, and print with or without the answer key, which starts on a new page.
Wo or wohin: the same preposition twice
Wo or wohin? (in den Park · im Park) prints each pair together. First comes the sentence where someone or something goes to a new place, then the sentence where it is, with the article blanked in both. A pair never splits across two pages, so students always see the same preposition take the accusative in one line and the dative in the next.
The pairs are dealt by preposition, so a sheet of 10, 12 or 15 pairs uses all nine two-way prepositions. There are 48 pairs to draw on: 11 with in, 8 with auf, 6 with an, 5 with hinter, 4 each with neben, über and vor, and 3 each with unter and zwischen.
Placement verbs: stellen or stehen?
German placement verbs come in pairs, and the chart lists five: stellen and stehen, legen and liegen, setzen and sitzen, hängen and hängen, and stecken and stecken. The first of each pair puts something somewhere and takes the accusative: Ich lege die Zeitung auf den Tisch. The second says where it is and takes the dative: Die Zeitung liegt auf dem Tisch.
Placement verbs (stellen or stehen? legen or liegen?) uses the 26 pairs built on the first three: 12 with stellen and stehen, 8 with legen and liegen and 6 with setzen and sitzen. The verb is blanked with both verbs as the hint (legen / liegen), and the article is blanked too, so students choose the verb and the case together. Hängen and stecken are the same verb both ways, so there's no verb to choose. They turn up in the Wo or wohin? pairs.
The one-page prepositions chart
The Prepositions chart puts the rules on one page: the wo or wohin rule with an example, the nine two-way prepositions with an example pair each, the placement verbs, the contractions, time expressions and fixed pairs, and the prepositions that take one case only. Hand it out before the first worksheet, or keep it beside the quiz.
The German two-way prepositions guide sets out the same chart on a web page and explains each part.
Free German prepositions worksheets for classrooms
Every worksheet prints in black and white. Print it, or save it as a PDF, on A4 or US Letter. There's no signup, and teachers may photocopy the worksheets for their classes.
To practice on screen, the German prepositions quiz asks one sentence at a time and gives the reason after every answer. For der, den, dem and des without a preposition, the German case worksheets drill the articles in all four cases.
Frequently asked questions
Are these German prepositions worksheets free?
Yes. There's no signup, and teachers may photocopy them for their classes.
Is there a German prepositions PDF with answers?
Yes. Every worksheet prints or saves as a PDF on A4 or US Letter. The answer key starts on a new page, so you can print the sheet without it. The chart is the one exercise without a key, since there's nothing on it to fill in.
Can I make a dative or accusative prepositions worksheet?
Yes. In Fill in the article, tick only Dative (mit dem Bus, bei mir), and every line has a preposition that always takes the dative. Tick only Accusative (für dich, durch den Park) for the accusative, or any mix of the four groups.
Is there a Wechselpräpositionen worksheet with answers?
Yes, two of them. Wo or wohin? prints pairs with the same two-way preposition, once with the accusative and once with the dative. Placement verbs asks for stellen or stehen, legen or liegen and setzen or sitzen, with the article. Both come with an answer key, and Fill in the article can drill the two-way prepositions too.
Which levels are the sentences?
Fill in the article covers A1 to B2, and you choose the levels. The 139 sentences written for these worksheets and the quiz run from A1 to B1, and they were reviewed for natural German.
What does the hint do?
It prints the nominative article in brackets after each gap: in ___ (der) Park. Students then know the gender and only have to find the case. Leave it off for a test.
How many lines or pairs can a worksheet have?
Fill in the article prints 10, 15, 20, 25 or 30 lines. The two pair exercises print 5, 8, 10, 12 or 15 pairs.
Can each student get a different worksheet?
Yes. Press Shuffle before you print each copy, and the same choices deal new sentences. With every group and level ticked, Fill in the article draws on up to 848.
