Open tool →Where to start with Japanese writing
Japanese uses three scripts, and most learners take them in this order. Each step has a free printable worksheet here, with numbered stroke order for every character.
- Hiragana, the 46 basic characters used for grammar and native words. Start with the hiragana worksheets, one row of the chart at a time.
- Katakana, the same 46 sounds in angular shapes, used for loanwords and names. The katakana worksheets put look-alikes such as シ and ツ side by side.
- Kanji, the characters borrowed from Chinese. The kanji worksheet generator has every kanji from JLPT N5 to N1, starting with the 79 of N5.
Two more tools support the practice. The Japanese writing paper page has blank genkō yōshi and kanji practice squares as ready-made PDFs, for writing freely once you know a character. The kanji to hiragana converter adds furigana to any Japanese text, so you can read material above your level before you have learned its kanji.
Free for learners and teachers
Every tool works in the browser with no account, prints in black and white on A4 or US Letter, and saves as PDF from the print dialog. Teachers may photocopy the worksheets for their classes.
