Free Spanish Commands Worksheets

These free Spanish commands worksheets print the commands your class is working on, from a tú commands worksheet to a formal commands worksheet for usted and ustedes. There are four exercises: writing the command, adding the pronouns, making it negative and filling in a chart. Every sheet comes with an answer key on its own page, and it prints on A4 or US Letter or saves as a PDF, with no signup.

Four Spanish commands exercises

  1. Write the command. Students write the command for the person and verb given: (tú) hablar → habla, and (tú) no hablar → no hables.
  2. Add the pronouns. Students put the command and its pronouns together: Di + me + lo → Dímelo, and No digas + me + lo → No me lo digas.
  3. Make it negative. Students turn an affirmative command into a negative one, moving any pronouns in front: (tú) Cómpralo. → No lo compres.
  4. Fill-in chart. A table of up to 12 verbs, with one column for each person you pick. Tú and vosotros get two columns, affirmative and negative, because their negative is a different form. Usted, ustedes and nosotros get one column each, since their negative is no plus the same form. The first row is filled in as an example.

Choosing the persons and verbs

Every worksheet starts with the persons: any of tú, usted, ustedes, nosotros and vosotros. For a formal commands worksheet, pick usted and ustedes. For a tú commands worksheet, pick tú on its own. The other choices depend on the exercise. Write the command and Add the pronouns let you choose whether the commands are affirmative or negative. Add the pronouns takes one or two pronouns, and Make it negative takes none, one or two.

The verbs come in the same five sets as the Spanish commands quiz: regular (hablar → habla, no hables), spelling change (buscar → busque, no busques), the 8 irregular tú commands (di, haz, ve, pon, sal, sé, ten, ven), other irregular and stem-changing (pensar → piensa, dormir → no duermas) and reflexive (sentarse → siéntate, no te sientes). A sheet can have 10, 15, 20, 25 or 30 lines. Shuffle makes a new sheet from the same choices, which lets you hand out more than one version of the same worksheet.

Printing, the answer key and saving as PDF

Every worksheet prints on A4 or US Letter. The answer key starts on a new page, so you can print the sheet without it and keep the answers for yourself. To save a PDF, choose Save as PDF in the print dialog and set the margins to none.

Worksheets on paper, the quiz on screen

The worksheets use the same verbs and rules as the Spanish commands quiz, which asks for one command at a time and gives the reason after every answer. Students can practice there between lessons, and “Practice my mistakes” runs the commands they missed again. To teach the rules first, the Spanish commands chart sets out every form, from the eight irregular tú commands to where the pronouns go. For the other tenses, the Spanish verb conjugation worksheets print fill-in boxes for the same verbs.

Frequently asked questions

Are these Spanish commands worksheets free?

Yes. There's no signup, and every sheet comes with an answer key.

Can I make a formal commands worksheet as a PDF?

Yes. Pick usted and ustedes, then print and choose Save as PDF in the print dialog, with the margins set to none. In the fill-in chart, usted and ustedes get one column each, because their negative is no plus the same form: hable, no hable.

Can I print the worksheet without the answer key?

Yes. The answer key starts on a new page, so you can leave those pages out when you print.

Why do tú and vosotros get two columns in the chart?

Their negative isn't the affirmative with no in front. Habla becomes no hables, and hablad becomes no habléis, so each needs a column of its own.

How many lines can a worksheet have?

You can choose 10, 15, 20, 25 or 30. Shuffle makes a new sheet from the same choices.

Do the worksheets match the quiz?

Yes. They use the same verbs and rules as the Spanish commands quiz, so a class can practice the same commands on paper and on screen.
